The Greene Room

The pub has been immortalised by Graham Greene in his classic novel "Brighton Rock". In honour of that it was decided that the upstairs bar be refurbished in 2005 and re-named The Greene Room. Fortune of War

Having opened its doors way back in 1882, the Fortune of War is far and away the oldest seafront watering whole, and hence the only pub amongst numerous clubs and bars. It is also the only venue in the whole of Brighton to be shaped like an upside down boat. The main attraction, however, has to be the extremely large beer garden, otherwise known as Brighton beach – offering unparalleled views and atmosphere, even if it is a tad pebbly.

Close to the North Laine and the Staion but situated away from the main nightlife spots, the Three Jolly Butchers is particularly busy at lunchtimes and early weekday evenings. They serve food (from ciabattas and salads to pub grub like bangers and mash and homemade burgers) seven days a week, with an excellent roast on Sundays. Everything on the menu is freshly made on the premises – the managers also run the adjacent sandwich shop which shares the same name.

Preston Park is probably the most well-known park in Brighton bring situated on the London Road and an important landmark for visitors travelling into Brighton from the north. There are 63 acres of parkland incorporating beautiful bedding schemes which can be seen from the main road. There is also a formal rose garden, six bowling greens and 12 tennis courts in the park, plus a children's playground, a croquet lawn, a garden for the blind and a small pond with stepping stones.

With a father who was a skilled model maker and a mother who was an avid collector of antiques, he began collecting and restoring toys while he was still at school. Despite its close proximity to West Street, the Fiddler’s Elbow is a thriving traditional Irish pub – the only one in this part of Brighton. Said to serve the best pint of Guinness in the city (and probably the cheapest too) they also have an enormous selection of Guinness memorabilia on the walls and fixtures and fittings that actually originated in Ireland. You'll find a good selection of Irish whiskies on offer too.

Smaller than most of its neighbours, the Funky Buddha Lounge is a stylish and highly characterful seafront club essentially shaped like two giant interlinked tubes, with bars at the front and back. A strict door policy, especially at weekends, helps to maintain the desired atmosphere, although that changes from night to night thanks to a highly varied range of music, stretching from indie to RnB to disco.

The Level

The Level is a small green area to the north east of the town centre, linking the main London and Lewes Roads and is therefore a busy thoroughfare. The Levels were once open fields where fishermen could safely spread their nets, and are now edged by the remains of a double avenue of Elm trees - unfortunately many of these trees were destroyed by the hurricane of 1987. There is a children's playground and, in the summer, a cafe and paddling pool.

Centrally located but markedly different in atmosphere from anything on neighbouring West Street, the Easy Bar has a committed lunchtime and after work crowd during the week, turning into more of a party venue at weekends. They have DJs every weekend, playing everything from house to funk and soul, with the regular It’s A Rave Dave being particularly notorious. There’s also a monthly comedy night and, though a long way from a sports bar, they show most footie matches too.
