Ancient MarinerNamed for its location on Coleridge Street in Poet’s Corner, the Ancient Mariner is a large, stylish and family-friendly pub with a loyal following of regulars. Fortune of WarHaving opened its doors way back in 1882, the Fortune of War is far and away the oldest seafront watering whole, and hence the only pub amongst numerous clubs and bars. It is also the only venue in the whole of Brighton to be shaped like an upside down boat. The main attraction, however, has to be the extremely large beer garden, otherwise known as Brighton beach – offering unparalleled views and atmosphere, even if it is a tad pebbly. | ![]() |
Three Jolly ButchersClose to the North Laine and the Staion but situated away from the main nightlife spots, the Three Jolly Butchers is particularly busy at lunchtimes and early weekday evenings. They serve food (from ciabattas and salads to pub grub like bangers and mash and homemade burgers) seven days a week, with an excellent roast on Sundays. The LevelThe Level is a small green area to the north east of the town centre, linking the main London and Lewes Roads and is therefore a busy thoroughfare.
The Levels were once open fields where fishermen could safely spread their nets, and are now edged by the remains of a double avenue of Elm trees - unfortunately many of these trees were destroyed by the hurricane of 1987.
There is a children's playground and, in the summer, a cafe and paddling pool. | ![]() |
Easy BarCentrally located but markedly different in atmosphere from anything on neighbouring West Street, the Easy Bar has a committed lunchtime and after work crowd during the week, turning into more of a party venue at weekends. They have DJs every weekend, playing everything from house to funk and soul, with the regular It’s A Rave Dave being particularly notorious. There’s also a monthly comedy night and, though a long way from a sports bar, they show most footie matches too. | ![]() |
