Brighton and Hove has many cyclists but, like many UK towns, does not have many dedicated and safe cycle lanes. Where they do exist, many are simply white lines painted down the side of a busy road.

Many people would cycle if it were safer to do so and this would have tremendous benefits. For example:

Improving physical health
Improving mental health
Reducing pollution
Reducing CO2 emissions
Reducing traffic congestion
Reducing road accidents
Reducing household expenditure on fuel and car maintenance

Yeah, good idea. We really need to spend millions on upgrading some of the best cycle routes in the UK.

We should lead the way and make them the best in the UK! Why not use the millions collected in parking fines and spend them on building proper cycle lanes?

Or on subsidising buses, which more people use? Oh, they do that already...

Or they could use it to get the homeless off the streets, or something less irritatingly middle class wankery.

If I were a councillor, I'd demolish 100 yards of cycle lane for each group member.

If the group got over 1000 people, I'd re-use the concrete to build a large waste incinerator in Queens Park.

You have missed the point; the group is about making it safer to cycle around Brighton by separating cars from cycles. It is certainly not a debate on ecology or whether it is wanky to cycle.

so what's your stance on cyclists terrorising pedestrians on footpaths and cyclists ignoring traffic signals and signs?

Was that a link to a story about a UK council implementing something due to facebook pressure? No.

Now fuck off.

A white kerb instead of a white line would be good.

So, if you don't want lanes painted down the side of roads, where DO you want them?

a kerb eh?, hmm

although your stressing of the colour white might shade the opinion of the multiculturist brigade

may i suggest a non-denominational shade of khaki; or even better, seeing as it's brighton - pink

Really. I'm genuinely interested. Where will you put these lovely new cycle lanes, if not as a lane by the side of the road?

Please bear in mind that the most dangerous cycle lanes are the ones along the seafront, sharing the pavement rather than the road.

I fucking hate cyclists. As I ride my scooter through London everyday I have to deal with them a lot. They jump lights, ride down one way streets, cut people up, run pedestrians down, every possible road offence in fact. I have a number plate (and London is CCTV’ed to the max) so I don’t get an opportunity to do anything of the like. Am I jealous? Maybe...

But what winds me up more is the how these serial road abusers (who wouldn’t think twice about running an old lady down on the lights if it meant not breaking their cycling momentum) consider themselves so self-righteous about everything. Yes, you’re not using petrol. Well done. But that dosen’t give you the right to behave like a cunt.

Cycle lanes my arse.

That proves my point about cyclists being humourless, self-righteous knobheads

But I'm not too happy about being in agreement with Matthew Parris Sad smile

Yep, there are certainly some b**stard cyclists that would knock you down if you walked into the cycle lane.

As I said, a curb between the cycles and cars would be good and would make it [nearly] impossible for cars to park in the cycle lane (as they do along Lewes Road).

i must say i'm flattered kazza; someone taking a commonsense attitude to teh cycling pressure massif

basically if you want parity with other road users then it's high time for a licence, registration and taxes

Would this narrow the cycle lane or the car lane?

half-and-half; a sloping curb so if your wheel grazes it you get pushed back to your side
