New Ice Cream Cafe
Posted by: Cloudnine
Date: February 26, 2010 11:39AM
Hey guys,
Im new to this forum and would like to ask a few people some questions if poss.
Me and my partner are looking to open a new ice cream cafe in Brighton that will sell Ice cream and Cupcakes and other amazing cakes.
We have been to scoop and crumb and to Angle food bakery and both are doing very well, but was not blown away with there taste and quality, if we were to open up in this area would local people try this new store or stay with what they have?

I'm afraid I think Scoop and Crumb is amazing. It's always packed. All home-made, which is good. I don't quite get why you weren't impressed, which makes me excited for whatever you can come up with.
I love the Angel Food bakery too.
If you want to compete, then I'd suggest the only way is to get yourself on or near Gardner Street/Bond Street or somewhere around there, and get the crowds and passing trade: Scoop and Crumb is quite tucked away. It's hard to set up and pull people off the beaten track now there's a couple of players.
I'm always happy to see new ice cream and cake shops, and I'm often struck how the North Laine doesn't really have one (Cafe Utopia is properly shit), though the cornish pasty shop near Infinity does great cakes and Cafe Delice opposite HSBC is good (but a coffee shop, not a cake shop). So I'd say that's your target.
Lick is very disappointing, and I'm surprised they haven't gone tits-up. They opened only doing one flavour of frozen yoghurt with toppings, so I didn't bank on them lasting the first winter. I note they're trying to be a coffee and hot chocolate shop instead now.
I absolutely and completely love ice cream and cakes with every fibre of my being, so if you're as good as or better than Scoop and Crumb then I promise I'll come. And cum, probably. Just don't be too expensive, Scoop and Crumb prices are about right.
EDIT - that's not to say it won't be a hell of a risk, but I'm sure you know that! Plus, of course, quality doesn't always win out. Good luck

Thank you for the above feedback.
Scoop and Crumb is good dont get me wrong but being from London and having various ice cream from around the world while travelling i was not blown away, there service was decent and they were full and there tucked away as saidi thought a little expensive 2:10 a scoop and thought that there selection on ice cream was not huge. However love there look and there appeal to local familys and trade.
Angle food does good cupcakes however again was not blown away however again loyal local base of customers.
Lick cant believe how poor that is.... I was suprised at the cost of there drinks and other items.
May I ask your name, age and sex and job? only asking as we looking for people from brighton to talk to.
We want to offer the best value and quality we can with a few twists along the way.

£2.10 a scoop is expensive, yes.
But a fiver for a sundae isn't. And their waffles are great, hard to finish a waffle with 2 scoops and sauce (though somehow, I manage. It's hard, it really is).

Oooh missis, you shouldn't ask such questions.
Do you mean if I were dragged into an ice cream shop?
I would hope they sell the waffles Wunty Wun was talking about.
Also, I'm quite surprised there are no pancake shops around. Years ago I lived in Holland and the pancake shops were ace. We used to go to one every weekend. My ma and pa used to have savoury and me and me sis would have sweet.
Prior to living in Holland we lived in Dundee and even they had a pancake house.
As far as i know there isn't one in Brighton.
So please open one
Many thanks

We have looked at local placves to see what they offer and there is not much going on with new flavors and there may be a reason for this!!!
But we will be offering Cheesecake, Cakebatter, Straberrys and Balsamic Vinger and Praline and Cream. ( we make own pralines and carmal) As for cakes Brownies and Cupcakes we have a great treat for you all.
Our shop will be just near donatalies Resturant by the eatouts in the lanes, any opinions?

Not a bad place, actually. Tucked away, but probably decent footfall.

Yes tucked away so name or mouth will be key, but near angle food bakery and by all food places off high street. Locals will be key to helping us out.

lol sorry people, I have a spelling issue. Never helps when on Iphone typing messages using the keypad.
I take note of shake away and they do have a great Business plan but there ice cream used in milkshakes is cheap sadly.
The Pirate accent was a very funny way of using my spelling and grammar mistakes to make light heart fun.
Any other ideas people want to see in a cafe with Ice cream and cakes?

In Belgiumland the do waffles with ice cream in the middle.
Anyway, can I suggest that there are many many people in Brighton who like to watch their weight and treat their bodies as temples. Will you be doing low fat ice cream?

If you do low fat ice cream, I'll boycott you.
That's like doing low alcohol beer or high-free drugs or colour free flowers.

Tit!
I meant as a choice
I seem to remember ice cream shops offer some flavours in low fat
Anyway, colour free flowers are lovely. I have some in my vase on my windowsill right now.
(It's actually just an empty vase, but I'm going to tell people I have colour free flowers)

There are two unique areas in central Brighton:
The Lanes
and
North Laine
There is no such place as South Lanes, South Laine, North Lanes or any other combination of these.
You need to be careful as slips like that will get you hounded out of town by angry Argus letter-writers*
