12 Stone Toddler Plus Turning Green At Komedia
Published 7th Mar 2007 by Chris Challis
12 Stone Toddler will be celebrating the release of their forthcoming new single 'TWANG' - and having just finished recording their debut album Does It Scare You? They will be in high spirits! This fourpiece is the brainchild of songwriters Chris Otero and Ben Jones. The sheer enormity of their sound, combined with fiery, adrenaline fuelled performances, leaves an indelible imprint on the mind that’s highly addictive. The sound is deliciously strange and familiar – expect stomping grooves, catchy vocal harmonies and memorable hooks, epic crooning ballads underpinned by glitzy fairground themes – a queasy ride full of ecstasy and danger. It’s power cannot be resisted – enjoy trying!
Influences are drawn from the whole spectrum and linked in a neutral, spontaneous way. They love rock iconoclasts like Zappa, Mr. Bungle and Prince. They love the quirky darkness of Tom Waits and Primus. They love kitsch stuff and lounge music like Martin Denny. They love TV and film themes of Ennio Morricone and Henry Mancini. They love Funkadelic. They love the Swing era. They love cartoon music. They love perfect pop songs, but haven’t heard many lately.
Whenever 12 Stone Toddler hit the stage they are about to embark on an assault on the eyes and ears of the Great British public. With bouncy bass and drum dynamic, an overall sound that sometimes veers towards 'metal' but which has the sublime Frank Zappa-esque hard and funk-rock rhythms at its heart. In this music-rich city of ours, they are definitely one of Brighton's finest - trend setters, not followers, boisterous and brilliant, sinister-friendly, deviant and fun.
12 STONE TODDLER visit Komedia on Thursday 22 March at 8pm. Tickets are £8/£6 conc. available on-line or from the Box Office on 01273 647100 (booking fees apply).
