A little bit of Exposure
Exposure is a new annual photographic exhibition and competition, held at brightonwave hotel, Madeira Place in Kemp Town. It offers visitors the chance to see work from the best of Sussex?s photographers in the 'fresh and funky' setting of the brightonwave hotel, recently reviewed in Time Out.

Featuring 11 photographers, the exhibition includes more than 40 pieces of work, spread throughout the hotel?s recently modernised interior. Hoteliers Shaun and Martin asked local artist Caroline Brown to organise a group photographic exhibition that would complement the hotel?s contemporary style and provoke interest in the hotel and the exhibiting photographers.

The hotel?s six ensuite rooms with their muted colours, luxuriously oversize suede headboards and flat-screen TVs, each feature the work of a different photographer. The hotel?s premier bedroom has a modern four-poster bed and a balcony with sea views, making it the ideal setting for Ruth Thomas? images that are alternative takes on Brighton sights. Other bedrooms feature Nigel Hammond?s contemplative images of the Far East and Claire Davidson?s monochrome portrayals of the figure in movement.

Striking black and white images of New York?s architecture, by photographer Stewart Weir add impact to the blue-grey lounge, with its period features and custom-made furniture. The variety of work throughout the hotel, all in perfectly chosen spaces will make Shaun and Martin?s task of choosing their favourite photograph a difficult one. Shaun says, ?The winner will receive free photographic processing from Spectrum photographic, who have kindly sponsored the prize. I think it?s a great way to show our appreciation of the local photographers who are exhibiting here, and will also encourage visitors to look around and see if they agree with our choice!?

The exhibition launches on 20 May and lasts until mid-September, when it will be replaced with an exhibition devoted to paintings, again selected and hung by Caroline Brown.

Caroline says, ?Exhibiting at the brightonwave hotel provides local photographers and artists with exposure away from the sterile gallery environment. For the hotel it brings a special finishing touch to the interior and helps to make it a great place for the style conscious to stay.?

Photographers involved are:

Lisa Creagh, Stewart Weir, Nigel Hammond, Simon Holroyd, Orlando Chasey, Ruth Thomas, Barbara Taylor, Karen Barratt, Claire Davidson, Becky Wickham, Ben Gold.
