A New Cat On The Block

Independent pub operators, Zelgrain Ltd., refurbish the Black Lion. 26/9/02

The Black Lion is a pub steeped in Brighton?s history. Having been persecuted in Flanders for his religion, Derrick Carver, came to Brighton in the mid 1500s and opened up the Black Lion Brewery named after the crest of Flanders which was a black lion. Unfortunately Carver was further persecuted for his religious beliefs here in Brighton and was eventually burnt at the stake in Lewes. Despite Carver?s death, the Black Lion has lived on and Zelgrain Ltd., the current owners will be breathing new life into Carver?s legacy.

With the same name and a new coat, the Black Lion is standing proud once again. Zelgrain will be maintaining the Black Lion?s tradition whilst importing a sense of cutting edge modernism. Taking certain environmental aspects pioneered at the Earth and Stars, the Black Lion will feature a granite bar, furniture constructed of recycled materials and electricity supplied by Unit[e], a wind-powered electricity company. Safe in the knowledge that the environment is being looked after, customers can recline in the newly constructed alcoves, and chose from a full bar of premium beers and spirits.

Elly Ward, manager of the Black Lion, commented, ?The Black Lion is a lovely pub that, despite being in the centre of the city, is very often missed. The refurbishment will bring the Black Lion back towards the standing it deserves.? Ward continued, ?We are very keen to maintain the historical and traditional aspects of the pub from the name through to the original hanging sign, but adding a contemporary flavour. The pub will have a very cosy atmosphere set in a cool, modern setting.?

The Black Lion will be launched for the public on Friday 18 October. If you require any more information about the Black Lion, please contact:
