An Evening With Ian Mcculloch
Published 3rd Jun 2010 by Matt Costello
For more than 20 years, Echo & The Bunnymen have been striving for greatness, occasionally tripping over their long coats, but more often than not providing the listening public with moments of glistening pop brilliance.
Now comes a new chapter, with the arrival of a solo record from the long-time front man of Liverpool's favourite indie popsters, Ian McCulloch. After the huge success of the band's comeback over the past few years, Ian is having another shot at a solo career, and another venture without cohort Will Sergeant.
When the Bunnymen returned from the wilderness in 1997 with the hit album Evergreen, it was regarded by many in the know as the greatest comeback of all time. But no mere flash-in-the-pan was this; the Bunnymen had the audacity to stick around afterwards, delivering two more studio releases and the emotionally charged Live In Liverpool collection. Their return was crowned with a critically acclaimed run of gigs at the Royal Albert Hall in 2008, where McCullock was described as having “[a] voice… like torn silk and as magnificent as ever” (The Independent).
McCulloch has since returned to the studio without the rest of the band and come up with a set of songs that, while not straying too far from the Bunnymen ethos, seem to have a more personal stamp on them.
Now as part of his solo tour McCulloch is headed to Brighton Komedia to bring his new, confident sound to the south coast. With his live set capturing the varied mood of his recordings, from upbeat, eternal optimism through anthemic jangle to dirty strut, these are songs with deceptive little hooks that worm their way into your soul long after they’re over. It’s the sound of a man who knows his time and place - and its now, its here.
An evening with Ian McCulloch visits Komedia Brighton on Saturday 12th June at 8pm. Tickets are £19.50 available on-line at www.komedia.co.uk/brighton or from the Box Office on 0845 293 8480.
