Ancient Rome Comes To Brighton in the form of Sand Sculptures

Ancient Rome Comes To Brighton in the form of Sand Sculptures
Published 26th May 2006 by Michelle Lamb

Brighton, home to Julius Caesar for summer ?06

Around 60 artists from all over the world are congregating in Brighton this summer to create one of the world?s largest sand sculpture festivals.

From 1st June to 10th September, Brighton will be home to the gladiators, Julius Caesar, the Colosseum, the Pantheon, Hadrian?s Wall, and many other historical images of ancient Rome, carved out of sand in the biggest and most impressive sand sculpture event the UK has ever seen.

Nearly 10,000 tons - 500 lorry loads - of special rough edged river sand is being shipped from Holland and will stretch across 40,000 sq ft of land at Black Rock near Brighton Marina. It will take professional sculptors, jetting in from far and wide including Russia, Holland, Hawaii, USA, Germany, France and the UK, over two weeks to bring Rome to Brighton. Over 9,000 sq ft of the exhibition will be covered by specially erected tents ? uniquely forming the largest ever indoor area of any sand event in the world.

The sculptures are made purely from sand and water and can easily withstand winds up to Force 7. During the first four days of the festival visitors can watch the artists in action as they put the final touches to their magnificent creations.

Opening Times & Ticket Prices:

Monday to Sunday 11am - 6 pm. Tickets: ?6 adults/?5 concessions/?4 kids/under 4?s free - Family tickets: 2 adults and 3 children for ?21
Venue: Brighton Marina
