Awesome Autumn at the Gardner Arts Centre
Published 4th Aug 2006 by Julia Johnson
The Gardner Arts Centre is counting down to its strongest autumn season ever – with some of the best dance and contemporary theatre companies in the country clamouring to do their thing in Brighton!
Stars include Liam Steel of DV8 fame in Revelations (Nov 7 & 8), a daredevil aerial mix of dance and theatre looking at the consequences of revealing our deepest desires, award winning choreographer Maresa von Stockert with Tilted Productions presenting a wry look at life, dreams and ageing Marjorie’s World Unhinged (Oct 4), and internationally renowned performance artist Bobby Baker on her first ever trip to Brighton, trying to answer the biggest question of them all How to Live (Nov 1 & 2).
The season also features a new play from the Royal Court Theatre 93.2FM (Oct 10 & 11) by much acclaimed new writer Levi David Addai and the fantastic choir The Shout with, Stand (Oct 13) who have just performed in Trafalgar Square with a piece commissioned by the Mayor of London, and who featured at this years Proms.
There is a distinctly international flavour with Théâtré Sans Frontieres adaptation of the best selling novel Like Water For Chocolate (Como Agua Para Chocolate) (Nov 13 & 14) a sizzling, succulent dish marinated in forbidden passion, garnished with humour and served with lashings of the bittersweet pain of stifled love performed mostly in Spanish, and Tiempo de Tango – Romance d’Carnaval (Oct 17) a sexy, sensual evening of tango from the amazing ArtLAT.
There’s plenty for the younger audiences with Message in a Bottle (Oct 14) based on the Irish legend of the demon of Merrow Deep and featuring puppets as well as people (age 4+), and Professor Bumm’s Story Machine (Nov 11) a fun and wacky interactive show for children aged 7+. And this year’s Christmas show is The Gruffalo’s Child (Dec 11 – 30) from Tall Stories- the sequel to the hit The Gruffalo and based on the favourite children’s picture books.
Last but definitely not least there is the renowned dance company Walker Dance Park Music (Oct 19) with 5 2 10 – a journey through human emotions from live music and breathtaking choreography, and Susan and Darren (Nov 22-23) where dancer Darren and his mum Susan put on a lovely buffet in a unique kind of performance where real life doesn’t stop when the show starts.
All this between October and December 2006!
