Babyhead At Komedia
Published 11th Apr 2007 by Chris Challis
Babyhead has an intangible quality often been summed up by one word - ENERGY. It’s this energy combined with their unique sound and showmanship that has been catching the attention of the industry. Roni Size, Michael Franti and Ozomatli are just some of the names in their ever-growing fan base.
The story began in 1995 with four childhood friends making a raw untamed punk noise in a caravan on the Somerset levels. Ska soon came to the forefront of the
Babyhead sound and they joined the insular,
draining, small time, Wednesday night Bristol promotion circuit - hooking up with other Bristol bands in the same boat. It was 2002 when the gradual curve of Babyhead’s success took a steep incline as the band were beginning to enjoy higher profile gigs outside of Bristol.
The ska sound felt authentic with the addition of the horns and was easy to dance to, appealing to young and old. By 2004, Babyhead’s song writing and lyricism had progressed; suits, hats and masks became a fixture of the show, as had theatrical routines. They played a full field at the Glastonbury Festival Jazz stage at 10.30am, a set at Ashton court before Roni Size, an Amnesty Internationals celebrity ball with Natasha Bedingfield and a Respect festival appearance that ended with an encouraged invasion of the stage by a child, a security guard, a transvestite and a dog.
Plus former Piranhas frontman Bob Grover’s new outfit Dates, lyrical topsy turvy music that’s 100% Brighton, will be supporting.
BABYHEAD visit Komedia on Friday 20 April at 9pm. Tickets are £8 in adv./£10 on door available on-line or from the Box Office on 01273 647100 (booking fees apply).
