Brighton Beach Volleyball Championships
Published 31st Jul 2006 by Mark Bisson
The cream of the UK's beach volleyball players are set to turn heads with their acrobatic spikes and smashes in a major competition on Brighton seafront later this month.
Sixteen of Britain's top men's and women's teams will showcase their beach volleyball skills and athleticism to a soundtrack of summer dance beats in the Shark Beach Volleyball Championships. The event, co-sponsored by The Sun newspaper, is staged on the sand court between the piers on the August 12/13 weekend.
Eight men's teams battle for supremacy of the sand on Saturday, with the women's teams contesting their title on Sunday. Professional referees, line judges and a top Australian commentator will keep the event running smoothly.
And The Sun's very own team of fitness fanatics and beach babes will wow crowds with an exhibition volleyball match, with the newspaper's promo bus parked up alongside. There'll also be giveaways from sponsor Shark Energy Drink.
Katie Randall, director of organiser Yellowave Beach Sports, said: "It's going to be a real sporting spectacle with a fantastic atmosphere - bigger and better than last year. The men's and women's teams are some of the best in Europe and will impress spectators with their dazzling array of skills.
"What better way for Brighton beach lovers to spend the weekend than by coming down and cheering on their favourite teams."
Spectators can watch the event for free, with many vantage points available right next to the beach court and on the upper promenade. Last year's beach volleyball championship held at the same location in glorious weather was a roaring success, attracting thousands of spectators over the two days.
