Brighton Fashion Weekend: Frocks Returns With More Fun, Frolics And Fashion
Published 7th Apr 2009 by Candice
Any self-respecting fashionista should make a date this May Bank Holiday for an exhilarating weekend of creative fashion events, bought to you by the team behind Brighton Frocks. Running from Friday 22nd to Sunday 24th May at various venues throughout the city, the Brighton-born fashion extravaganza will be bigger and better this year, offering visitors to the hip south coast resort a weekend of catwalk shows, shopping, open studios, workshops, VIP parties and fashion installations.
Brighton has always been a creative hub, attracting the likes of Julien McDonald who studied Fashion Textiles at Brighton University and Barbara Hulanicki, fashion designer and founder of Biba, who studied fashion illustration at Brighton School of Art. Last year’s Brighton Frocks Fashion Show saw Karen Millen on the front row, alongside creative directors from M&C Saatchi, Brighton girl about town Zoe Ball, and other influential figures in the world of fashion. The show won many plaudits, both locally and nationally, and was named ‘Event of the Week’ by Grazia magazine, featured on Channel 4’s Gok’s Fashion Fix, and in the Daily Mirror’s ‘Hot Tickets’ fashion section.
Brighton Frocks was born out of a desire to promote the city’s eclectic fashion industry and celebrate the diversity of talent. Its long-term aim is to establish Brighton as a recognised style centre with its own annual Fashion Week. The first Brighton Frocks fashion show took place in 2005, a free event featuring the work of 12 designers. Subsequent years saw a rise in popularity and critical appreciation, with 2008’s show selling out within hours. This year organisers are inviting designers from all over the UK to participate in the catwalk show, which takes place at the Hilton Metropole Hotel on Friday 22nd May, with an audience of over 1,000 people.
Budding designers will also have an opportunity to take part in the Brighton Frocks Fashion Emporium, a two-day sale of clothes, textiles, jewellery and eyewear, as well as couture showcases and sample sales. Within the Emporium there will be a Barefoot Wine lounge, makeover areas, DJs and much more.
Liz Bishop, organiser of the event says, “Brighton Frocks is going to be huge this year: the venue is bigger, the production will be slicker and the standard of designers taking part in the Brighton Frocks Fashion Show will be exceptionally high.”
“The city-wide event will be a chance for everyone involved to shine and show the rest of the UK and beyond what Brighton has to offer in terms of style and fashion,” she adds. “We’re currently in talks with some major figures in the fashion world who are keen to get involved, and so far the response from everyone has been amazing.”
“Visitors to Brighton Frocks will be treated to a whole weekend of fashion-related activities, parties and catwalk shows, so should make sure they make a date for the hottest fashion event of the year,” she says.
