Brighton Fireworks To Hold Huge Fireworks Display On Mid Summer?s Day!
Published 16th May 2005 by Mike Sansom
Come celebrate the launch of Brighton Bonfire Society and 100 Years of Rotary
On mid summer?s day, Friday 24th June 2005 at Devils Dyke, Brighton Bonfire Society will be launched. To mark this monumental event, Brighton Fireworks Limited, Brighton's largest firework company will be firing a mammoth display and it is all free!
We have now involved the Brighton & Hove South Downs Rotary Club. It is their Centenary year, and what better way is there to celebrate than a fireworks display! Rotary will now be closely involved with Brighton Bonfire Society and we will help each other with fundraising for our local charities.
November 5th this year will mark the 400th anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot. Ever since the fiendish plan to blow up our government and sovereign, James I, was foiled back in 1605, the people of England have set alight to bonfires in thanks giving. The residents of Sussex and in particular, Lewes, have always taken this tradition very seriously. Every year tens of thousands of people visit Lewes on Bonfire night to take part in, and watch the many parades of bonfire societies through the small streets of this sleepy Sussex town.
Brighton is on Lewes?s doorstep, and is one of the largest cities in Sussex, yet it has not had a bonfire society or taken part in this festivity for well over 100 years. This year will be different. After dusk on the 24th June 2005, mid summer?s day, Brighton Bonfire Society will be born. To celebrate there will be a huge fireworks display at one of Brighton?s most picturesque view points on the South Downs, Devils Dyke, and everyone?s invited. This date is appropriate as it is tradition for people around the world to light bonfires and set off fireworks on mid summers day to celebrate the sun and the start of the shorter days.
Sadly due to health and safety and the possible risk of downland fires we are not allowed to have a bonfire at this event. But we assure you that the fireworks will certainly make up for this!!
A parking area will be opened in a neighbouring farmer?s field at a cost of ?4 per vehicle.
For more information call Mike at Brighton Fireworks on 01273 880937 or 07919 088064.
Annual membership for Brighton Bonfire Society is ?10 adults and ?8 children under 16, students and OAP?s.
