Brighton Schools Funded To Turn Rags To Riches
Published 21st Feb 2011 by Clive Bonny

Five schools across East and West Sussex have won small enterprise support grants to recycle old clothes into new garments. The Royal Society of Arts Manufactures and Commerce have donated £2000 to help young people in Primary, Secondary and Tertiary education to develop their creative design skills with recycled textiles. The projects will help develop young entrepreneurs into the expanding world of fashion and sustainable design.
The schools include Shoreham Academy, Cardinal Newman Catholic School Brighton, Rydon Community College, Rustington Primary and the Steiner School in Roedean. The project is being supported by Brighton Fashion Week, local pattern-maker Sam Wolfstrome, and the Fashion, Design and Textile faculty at Brighton University.

Project co-ordinator and RSA Fellow Clive Bonny says: The UK fashion industry is one of the UK’s greatest export assets. This is a Catalyst project which will motivate young people to develop their enterprise skills at an early age re-fashioning low cost used and raw materials into interesting designs. We welcome others to join the scheme, especially anyone with old clothes which can be remodelled.”
