Brighton's Very First Hookah Caf

Brighton's Very First Hookah Caf
Published 1st Nov 2002 by Daniel Mokades

Daniel Mokades announced the opening of Hookah Dreams, Brighton's very first Hookah Caf? today. Following the success of hookah caf?s in Leeds, Oxford and London, Brighton has now joined the international community of this exciting cultural tradition. The Hookah, an ancient water pipe has been used around the world to smoke fruit-flavoured molasses tobacco for nearly four hundred years. Hookah Dreams offers a mouth-watering assortment of flavours including cherry, peach, double apple, apricot, rose, mango, banana and watermelon. Hookah Dreams is open every evening except for Monday at The Joint Caf? Bar, Cranbourne Street, between West Street and Churchill Square. Mokades, the founder of Hookah Dreams, brings a guarantee of quality and originality following his previous successes in other assorted enterprises. These include three comedy sketch shows, the last of which, The Mighty Bum was performed to a sold-out audience at The Komedia Theatre last year. His clubnight and Djing credits include the legendary Porno at The Joint nightclub, a monthly Saturday night which is still running strong after a three-year tenure.

Of this latest project Mokades recalled his lifelong love of the Hookah pipe: "I've adored Hookah pipes for years, I featured them in sketches for The Mighty Bum and my previous shows. The Hookah is a true cultural icon, it pops up in everything from the Bangles Walk Like An Egyptian to a scene set in a Hookah Caf? in Raiders of the Lost Ark. It's about time Brighton had a good Hookah Caf? and Hookah Dreams fits the bill perfectly. My aim is to bring the joy of this experience to a much wider audience: for too many years the hookah has lain dusty and unused in the corner of the local middle eastern restaurant. It's an immensely relaxing and convivial pleasure; and it offers a sparkling alternative to the ubiquitous pre-club bar which is everywhere in Brighton nowadays. My message to Brightonians is simple - come and give it a try because you've never seen anything like it."
