Charity Swim
Published 3rd Aug 2005 by Peter Morris

What Is Planned
Sunday 14th August 2005. (Reserve date in case of bad weather 28 August). Brighton SC will attempt its version of a cross Channel swim. This will consist of 34 swimmers participating in a relay swim around the Brighton Pier. The total distance attempted will be a distance in excess of the 21 miles between Dover and Cap Gris Nez the actual Channel distance between the 2 points. Further information on Cross Channel swimmers can be found at http://soloswims.com/CSA-kings.htm

In the afternoon at 6pm the ?Donut Dash? children?s race will take place to involve those Club members not yet old enough (Those under 14yrs on the day) to take part in the Channel relay swim. For further information about the Donut Dash please contact Eileen Remedios event organiser by email at: - Eileen.Remedios@surreyoaklands.nhs.uk .

Just after the finish a beach party is planned outside the Swimming Club arch (80m west of the Brighton Pier) at 6:30pm.

Purpose
i) Through sponsorship and collections on the day, we are hoping to raise much needed money to support and sustain the Club, in its role as Brighton?s largest Youth Club where people from the age of 5 years are taught and encouraged to be at ease in the water and to improve their swimming skills to a competitive level if they so wish.
ii) To raise some money for the local RNLI.
iii) To bring the entire club together in a major event for all members, family and friends to raise money and have fun. Even if you or your children are not taking part please come down to cheer the swimmers on and just enjoy the atmosphere!

Location
Each swimmer will start and finish on the beach beside the Pier and the short jetty just west of the Brighton Pier. Club marshals will monitor the event from the top of the groyne just west of the Pier.

Timings
First Swimmer?s Start Time will be 6am.
On 14th August it will be High Tide at 5.35am and again at 6.15pm. It will be a 5-metre tide.
Swim times expected to average just over 22 minutes depending on state of tide and swimmer?s speed. The target time to finish will be around 6pm.

Final Lap
We are pleased to announce that Mike Read the ?King of The Channel? with a record 33 successful crossings to his name, multiple record holder, the second person ever to circumnavigate the Isle of Wight, Olympic swimmer and life member of Brighton Swimming Club will honour the club by completing the final lap. We will all look forward to meeting him and hearing his stories.
