Cubar Gets Some Tlc

Cubar Gets Some Tlc
By Laura-Kate Roe 21st Oct 2004

The Cubar has now reopened after getting a new interior for the summer. The bar boasts a huge selection of drinks from ales to champagnes. It is situated at the south end of Brighton’s busy Preston street. It is in a great position for the beach and a stone throw away from many of the cities most loved restaurants and hotels.
Decorated in a range of chocolate browns with plenty of comfy leather seating and low lighting, the bar has been described as relaxing with a very friendly atmosphere.

Detail
Steve Baker and Ricky Fernando bought the bar at the end of May. They closed for one week and totally re-furbished with the help of friends and family. The Bar is a great space but was as part of the West Beach Hotel it needed some time and money spent on it to get the customers in. Although from the outside it still looks the same, inside it has changed dramatically. Catering for young professionals and pre-dinner parties the bar has a huge range of beverages to cater for all tastes.

As well as a great atmosphere the bar also offers events such as Latin Night, live music including jazz saxophonist and regular DJs. The owners aim to provide great entertainment without preventing chat so obviously the sound is at a level so that people of all ages can enjoy the surroundings.

The bar also has a raised area which is suitable for private parties it can be reserved free of charge for 10-20 people. Additional extras such as table service and nibbles are also available to this area on request. The bar is now taking booking for office Xmas parties please ask for L-K at the bar!

Plans going forward
As Steve and Ricky have never run a bar before they plan to run with the changes and try many different drink options and entertainment, to see what goes down with their customers. Once they know what works they plan to re-launch the bar under a different name. At this stage I plan on cranking up the marketing strategy and possibly opening with a launch party which I hope local press will attend.

Staff
Staff are employed because of their friendly characters we always make sure we have enough staff working so that they can chat to the customers. The owners want to ensure everyone feels relaxed even if they come into the bar alone, as many of our customers during the week are staying in the local hotels and may be travelling on business, great service is high priority.

Atmosphere
Comfy seating, chocolate browns with plants to break up the large area, these are pushed back to make room when bar gets busier Fri and Sat nights. There is also a raised area available for private parties (area is free to hire and seats up to 20 people) Table service and nibbles available on request.

Owners
Steve and Ricky are currently still working as accountants for one of Brightons main employers. They run the bar on-top of their office jobs, if the bar is successful they hope to be able to give up the day job!
