Cult Poster Art

Cult Poster Art
Published 12th Jun 2006 by Crane Kalman

Cult movies hold an appeal over us that the big, successful or critically acclaimed films somehow can never match. A new exhibition at Crane Kalman Brighton offers a selection of unusual and beautiful vintage posters dating from the 40s through to the 80s. The collection ranges from 50?s sci-fi/horror classics like ?Invasion of the Body Snatchers? to underground surf movies such as ?The Fantastic Plastic Machine? to the hard-boiled UK gangster classic ?Get Carter?.

Many people have different ideas of what constitutes a cult film. A cult film often features something different, something that you would never see in a Hollywood production. Pitch-black comedy, outrageous characters, bizarre plot lines, pushing the boundaries of what is generally deemed acceptable as cinematic entertainment.

For many of these films, the first line of promotion is the film poster, which provides the perfect opportunity to display a film?s most sensational elements through explicit graphics, strongly-worded text or an emphasis on a controversial subject matter.
The exhibition runs from the 4th July ? 13th August with prices starting at around ?200. Crane Kalman Brighton is located at 38 Kensington Gardens, Brighton.
