Da Doo Ron Ron Is 11 All-niter! Guest Djs Incl Pete Wiggs (saint Etienne)
Published 29th Sep 2009 by Chris King
As seen on BBC1 TV & Channel 4 TV, as heard on the Craig Charles Funk & Soul show on BBC 6 Radio & on BBC Radio 4, as featured in the NME, Guardian, Time Out, The Times, The Pittsburgh (USA) City Paper & Grazia.
Da Doo Ron Ron - "the legendary 60s girl pop, soul & funk extravaganza" the NME - are chuffed to bits to celebrate our 11th! (yes, now we are eleven!) Birthday with superstar guest DJs Pete Wiggs (Saint Etienne), Jon Slade (Born Bad / Stone To The Bone / The Ookey Ook / Comet Gain), Declan Allen (All Tomorrow's Parties) and Steve KIW (Keeping It Wheel, The Residents Association / www.pushfm.com) taking to the Da Doo decks.
This stellar line-up of superstar DJs plus Da Doo founder & DJ Chris 'Da Doo' King (Stone To The Bone) & Da Doo resident DJ Simon Bridger (Brighton Northern Soul All-dayers) spin a mix of femme pop, soul sirens, sister funk and chicks with licks, spanning the late 50s, right through the 60s and up to the mid-70s; embracing Phil Spector's Wall of Sound, Tamla Motown, Sister Funk, Jazz, Girls in the garage, Soul / Northern soul, Girl group dramarama, Yé-Yé / Swingin' Mademoiselles, Latin and the occasional Ska, Country & Japanese tune.
Expect to hear the groovy likes of The Supremes, Ronettes, Shangri-Las, Chiffons, Crystals, Marvelettes, Dusty Springfield, Nina Simone, Etta James, Sarah Vaughan, Aretha Franklin, Wanda Jackson, Julie Driscoll, Tammi Terrell, Brenda Holloway, Marlena Shaw, Nancy Wilson, Ruth Brown, Bobbie Gentry, Laura Nyro, Grace Slick, Nancy Holloway, Lavern Baker, Nancy Sinatra, Petula Clark, Betty Harris, Della Reese, Peggy Lee, Brigitte Bardot, Betty Lavette, Lesley Gore, Jacqueline Taieb, France Gall, Lulu, Cilla, Susan Maughan, Shirley Bassey, Francoise Hardy and Helen Shapiro. All spun on crackly vinyl rekkids.
You will NEVER EVER hear a MALE LEAD vocal at DDRR!
**NB:This event is also part of Brighton's 'WHITE NIGHT' event, so the Da Doo DJs will spin plenty of songs serenading the duplicity of love!
