Da Doo Ron Ron Present Guest Dj Andy Smith at the Komedia
Published 15th Mar 2009 by Chris King
Da Doo Ron Ron - "the legendary 60s girl pop, soul & funk extravaganza", the NME - are extremely chuffed to present a bona fide superstar guest DJ:- ANDY SMITH (Ex-PORTISHEAD / The Document mix-CD series / Lost & Found club night @ Madam JoJo's) downstairs at the Komedia, Brighton on Friday 27 March '09. In keeping with the Da Doo femme-centric remit Andy will be spinning a one-off, NEVER-to-be-repeated set of 60s girl pop, Sisterly soul and funk!
Andy guested at a sold-out, ecstatic Da Doo Ron Ron last Feb ('08) & "blew the bloody doors off!" So his return is highly anticipated!
Andy Smith is best known for being the DJ & supplier of samples for legendary Bristol trip-hoppers PORTISHEAD, however, there's more to Andy than his justly celebrated work with Portishead.
He was the first DJ to release a multi-genre mix album on a major label. When his mix-CD The Document (Vol. 1) hit the streets back in 1998, it became the soundtrack for a generation who had heard Coldcut's Journeys By DJs but needed to hear more - The Document filled the void.
It segued tracks from artists such as Tom Jones (way before he was considered 'cool'!); Peggy Lee (sample source for the Beastie Boys single 'Ch-Check It Out'); The Jungle Brothers and The Spencer Davis Group. This wildly eclectic approach was new to 'most' record buyers but for Smith a mixed bag of treasures has always formed the typical contents of his DJ set. The Document Vol. 1 went on to sell an impressive 100,000 copies plus world-wide. Volume II and III followed and were greeted with both critical and popular acclaim. Vinyl copies of all three are highly sought after (especially by DJs!) and regularly go for exorbitant sums on E-bay! Since then, Andy has put together a veritable slew of comps including a reggae-flavoured Trojan Document, Andy Smith's Northern Soul, Andy Smith's Freestyle Mix, Andy Smith Lets Boogalooo Vol 4 and Andy Smith Diggin' in The BGP Vaults.
This appreciation of different genres made Smith the ideal person to provide sample material for Portishead on their first two multi-selling albums. He went on to make his name as the band's international tour DJ reflecting their respect for both the art of digging for breaks and hip-hop scratch DJ-ing. Hip-hop / sample elements formed the basis of the unique Portishead sound.
As a DJ Smith regularly appears in clubs across the world and his strong cult following has secured him constant DJ bookings including several residencies at:
Cargo (London), Jazz Café (London) and Madame Jo Jos with Keb Darge (London).
Like many a DJ Andy has also released his own material and in conjunction with Scott Hendy he runs production outfit Dynamo Productions.

Resident Da Doo DJs Chris 'Da Doo' King & Simon Bridger + ANDY SMITH (ex-PORTISHEAD / The Document mix-CD series / LOST & FOUND club night @ Madam JoJo's) spin a fabalicious mix of 60s femme pop, soul sirens, sister funk and chicks with licks (spanning the late 50s, right through the 60s and up to 1973); embracing Phil Spector's Wall of Sound, Tamla Motown, Sister Funk, Jazz, Girls in the garage, 60s girl pop, Soul / Northern soul, Yé-Yé / Swingin' Mademoiselles, Latin and the occasional Ska, Country & Japanese tune.
Expect to hear the groovy likes of The Supremes, Ronettes, Shangri-Las, Chiffons, Crystals, Marvelettes, Dusty Springfield, Nina Simone, Etta James, Sarah Vaughan, Aretha Franklin, Wanda Jackson, Julie Driscoll, Tammi Terrell, Brenda Holloway, Marlena Shaw, Nancy Wilson, Ruth Brown, Bobbie Gentry, Laura Nyro, Grace Slick, Nancy Holloway, Lavern Baker, Nancy Sinatra, Petula Clark, Betty Harris, Della Reese, Peggy Lee, Brigitte Bardot, Betty Lavette, Lesley Gore, Jacqueline Taieb, France Gall, Lulu, Cilla, Susan Maughan, Shirley Bassey, Francoise Hardy and Helen Shapiro. All spun on crackly vinyl rekkids.
You will NEVER EVER hear a MALE LEAD vocal at DDRR!
As seen on BBC1 TV & Channel 4 TV, as heard on the Craig Charles Funk & Soul show on BBC 6 Radio & on BBC Radio 4, as featured in the NME, Guardian, Time Out, The Times, The Pittsburgh (USA) City Paper & Grazia.
"At least two thirds of the crowd are girls who come to dance, so the atmosphere's always really special!"
