For Steve Finch (Matthew Broderick), no time of year can compare to the glory of the Christmas season. Despite the protests of his wife (Kristin Davis), daughter Madison (Alia Shawkat) and son Carter (Dylan Blue), super-organized Steve has the December calendar full with activity.

Steve's bliss is suddenly destroyed when slippery car salesman Buddy Hall (Danny De Vito) moves in next door. Buddy soon undermines his position as the local 'King of Christmas' when he festoons his new house with enough glowing lights so it will be visible from outer space.

As the rest of the two families bond and find friends amongst each other, Steve's and Buddy's escalating rivalry threatens the harmony of the Christmas period.
