Eastbourne To Host Inaugural Speed Days World Cup Event
Published 13th Aug 2007 by Seth Hand
Eastbourne is to host the world’s fastest and most dangerous downhill racing spectacle - including Street Luge and Downhill Skateboarding - at the inaugural Go Fast Speed Days event on Saturday 1st & Sunday 2nd September 2007.
Over 150 of the world’s fastest extreme downhill athletes from countries as far afield as Scotland, Sweden
and Germany to South Africa, California and Australia
will converge on Eastbourne’s Beachy Head to compete for the IGSA* World Cup Championship title.
Reaching speeds in excess of 80mph, the reigning Street Luge World Champion, Beni Weber from Switzerland, will defend his title from the former two times British, World Champion, Pete Elliot, who will be coming out of retirement especially to steal a win from his Swiss rival on home soil.
Kris Yule, director of Go Fast Sports UK, commented ‘It’s going to be a fantastic event to watch, and take part in, as we have the world’s best coming to town. Sports such as dirt surfing and street luge are really unique and have a niche following, more and more people are seeking out alternative sports and in terms of from both the spectators and athletes perspective, we’re really looking forward to showcasing these fast-paced, unique sports to the British public for the first time.’
Tom Worsley, Chairman of the UK Gravity Sports Agency, said: “We are delighted that this event is now on the world stage. The course at Beachy Head will be as fast and demanding as any of those in Europe and we will see riders from all around the world competing to be the winner of the first World Cup Downhill event in the UK”.
The event will also play host to the first ever Soapbox title at World Championship level, which will see amateur racers competing head-to head, with machines built by professional racing teams such as Vauxhall VXR, for the inaugural title.
With an expected audience of over 20,000, Beachy Head will provide a stunning backdrop for these exhilarating racing events. Entry is free and racing starts from 8am on both days. The qualifying heats will run on Saturday 1st with head-to-head racing on Sunday 2nd.
