Eclectic Singer Comes To Brighton Upstairs At Three And Ten
Published 25th Jan 2008 by Nicola Haydn
Armed with a Ukulele and a rich, seductive voice, she evokes the feel of the 1930?s European Underworld. Following a highly successful week performing at the Spiegeltent during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Patti Plinko was invited to perform with Dresden Dolls front-woman Amanda Palmer, who described her as "Like a mad f***ing Doris Day meets PJ Harvey.?
Now, in a rare treat for fans of this distinctive sound, Patti Plinko brings what she calls ?her blend of 'Dada Noir'? to Brighton with a show ?Upstairs at Three and Ten? on Friday 1 February.
Plinko herself describes their sound as ?a seductive, heady mix of Billie Holiday and George Formby trapped inside a tin-can while Kate Bush frantically searches for the can-opener?A voice like an angel, and a heart like a whore.?
Fresh from performing at London?s Shepherd?s Bush Empire alongside the Puppini Sisters, and greatly influenced by old European cinema, British music hall and the satirical underworld of Berlin Cabaret, Patti Plinko And Her Boy will carry the audience into the dark seductive world of yesteryear.
Her music has an eclectic array of influences: Jacqus Brel, Berlin cabaret and Billie Holiday all lurk in her dark and playful musical world, among the more modern likes of Regina Spektor and Kate Bush.
As part of her burgeoning reputation, recent accolades include the usually conservative BBC Radio Cambridge proclaiming Plinko's live studio performance their Pick of the Week and Diva Magazine featuring Patti Plinko And Her Boy as ?Hottest New Act?. Plinko's appearance ?Upstairs at Three and Ten? is an example of the high calibre of artists Brighton manages to attract, and another coup for Brighton?s newest, most intimate venue.
"Imagine Marilyn Monroe, Regina Spektor, Bessie Smith, Jacques Brel, the French Resistance, a glass of Absinthe and George Formby all whisked up in a blender. Just incredible. Seriously." The Hearing Aid
