Ellen MacArthur - Inspiring Young People?s Cancer Recovery Through Sailing
Published 1st May 2009 by Jude Clay

Ellen Puts her Trust in Musto for Round Britain Voyage.

Starting on Sunday 3 May, record breaking Yachts women Dame Ellen MacArthur will set out from Cowes to sail the first leg of a 2000 mile voyage around Britain with the first crew of young people recovering from cancer.

The Ellen MacArthur Trust Skandia Round Britain Voyage of Discovery will cover 2000 nautical miles in 132 days, 61 stops and involve 85 young people, The schedule will include 17 hospital visits during which the young sailors will share their experiences with current oncology patients. The objective is to inspire young people’s cancer recovery through sailing.

Organised by The Ellen MacArthur Trust, the trip in the 48 foot yacht Scarlet Oyster will repeat the first single-handed adventure Ellen undertook in her 21 foot Corribee Iduna in 1995, for which Musto supplied all her clothing. This time around, Musto is providing the skipper, mate and all crew members with foul weather gear and a commemorative t-shirt.

Visit to Brighton store

On Tuesday 5 May at 3pm to 4.30pm, Dame Ellen will visit the Musto store in Brighton, during the yacht’s stop-over, as part of a promotional programme about the Trust’s activities which will include the first public talks that Ellen has given since her record breaking round the world voyage in 2005.

Shortly before the departure from Cowes Ellen said: “It is thanks to the generosity of companies like Musto that we can set sail on this voyage. I have so many fond memories of my first trip around Britain nearly 15 years ago, when I started my relationship with Musto. This time around, I’m delighted that we can give so many young people recovering from cancer and leukaemia the opportunity to share the experience.”

Trust patrons Dame Ellen MacArthur and Olympic gold medallist Shirley Robertson will be taking part in the voyage, with Ellen already confirmed as sailing on three of legs. The stops include Dover, London, Ipswich, Hull, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Inverness, Glasgow, Belfast, Douglas, Liverpool, Cardiff and Torquay.

Musto History

Established in 1965 by British Olympic sailing medalist Keith Musto, the Musto brand has revolutionised technical outdoor clothing and is now established as the world’s No.1 technical sailing and country brand, offering high-spec technical quality, unique dedication to detailing and an authenticity of English heritage design. Musto was the brand of choice of Ellen MacArthur when she became the youngest and fastest woman to sail single-handed around the world. It has also been used by the RNLI for the last 20 years and supports three members of the British eventing team. Musto’s expertise in design, materials and construction comes from equipping the top sailors in the world, enabling them to perform at their best no matter how bad the conditions.

Musto Philosophy

Driven by innovation and engineering, Musto has become a brand synonymous with quality, durability and reliability. Using its heritage and expertise in technical outdoor product, Musto brings its brand to a broader audience. The collection bridges the gap between performance and casual wear, offering a thoroughly streamlined and innovative lifestyle range that pays homage to both its coastal and country heritage.
