Free Music Workshops In BrightonThis Easter
Published 26th Mar 2007 by Hannah Brine
Local musicians can take part in a variety of FREE music workshops next month, when Access to Music (ATM)* hosts an open day at Scream Studios. The workshops on Saturday April 21 are for anyone aged 14 and over interested in making music. Parents, teachers and careers advisors are also welcome to attend. There will be Band Workshops with Terry Bickers, Scratch DJ/ Ableton workshops with Jamie Griffiths (a national demonstrator for Ableton Live & M Audio) and Logic Pro 7, Reason and Garage Band software workshops with
Pat Gallagher. All three tutors are experts in their field.
Visitors can enjoy a tour of the facilities which include the recording studio, band rehearsal rooms, technology rooms and lecture rooms.
Martin Rossiter, lead singer and songwriter with 90’s indie band Gene, heads the tutor team at Brighton. The tutors combined experience includes record deals with Virgin, Creation, and Epic Records, top 10 chart success, world tours, TV and festival appearances and high profile production work for companies including Sony, Virgin, and Disney.
The tutors have also worked with a range of artists including Brian Ferry, Alabama Three and Phil Hartnell (Orbital), and featured in the national music press numerous times.
ATM runs two music courses in Brighton; the Performing Musician, for instrumentalists and vocalists, and the Creative Music Producer, for those interested in production and music technology. There are still places left for this September’s intake. Tuition is free to those aged 16-18 and those claiming benefits, and course fees are heavily subsidised for all others. Students study towards nationally recognised qualifications which can help gain entry to university.
Martin Rossiter, Centre Manager (and lead singer with 90’s band Gene), says:
“I would encourage anyone serious about their music education to pop along and meet with us.”
Access to Music Open Day – Saturday April 21, 10am-6pm ATM Studios, C1 Enterprise Point, Melbourne Street, BN2 3LH.
The band workshops run for two hours each and start at 10.00, 12.15 and 15.00. Participants should ideally bring their own instruments, although amps and drum kits are provided.
The technology workshops last an hour each and start at 10.00, 11.15, 12.30, 14.30, 15.45 and 17.00. All equipment is provided.

ENDS
ATM exists to prepare aspiring musicians for a career in the music industry. The underlying mission of Access to Music is to provide quality, innovation and training in music and increase the number of people who are actively involved in music at all stages in their lives.
With 18 centres across the country, students benefit from being part of a national network, which includes gigs, master classes from top musicians and an annual residential summer school. ATM acts, including students from Norwich, performed at the NEC’s Music Live exhibition held in November.
Patrons of ATM include Sir George Martin, Jools Holland and Nitin Sawhney. The late composer Michael Kamen was also a patron of Access to Music.
