Gustav Mahler's Second Symphony 'the Resurrection'

Gustav Mahler's Second Symphony 'the Resurrection'
Published 27th Oct 2008 by Eileen Cook

There is a rare opportunity for the concert-going public in the South to see and hear one the most dramatic and emotional works in the classical repertoire - that of Gustav Mahler's Second Symphony 'The Resurrection'.

The concert is on Saturday November 8th, at St Bartholomew's Church, Ann Street, Brighton (BN1 4GP) and starts at 7.30, finishing at approx 21.45.

The orchestra is huge for this concert, including 10 French Horns, 8 trumpets, 8 timpani, 7 percussion players, 2 harps, organ and 2 off stage bands - together with a combined choir number of 210, made up from the Billingshirst Choral Society and the Angmering Chorale. Two world class soloists complete the line up and are Catrin Aur Davies - Soprano and Diane Hatfield - Mezzo Soprano. This enormous ensemble will be conducted by the founder and musical director of the orchestra, Mark Andrew James.

This work is an intensely emotional experience, with a very short interval so as not to interrupt the effect - the soloists and choir enter proceedings quite late on in the work - but when the do - every hair on your head will stand on end, and will remain that way until the conclusion, so powerful is the moment!

It is so rare that works of this size, nature and complexity are ever performed outside major 'centres' but the Sussex Symphony has never been an organisation to shy away from a challenge and is relishing this opportunity to share these momets with the audience.
