Huge Charity Paddle Round The Pier To Bring The Aloha Spirit To Brighton
Published 12th May 2006 by David Somerville
The ?Maui Jim Paddle Round The Pier? charity event is back this year in Brighton on Sunday 2nd July.
The event brings together thousands of water users from across the UK ? surfers, canoeists, wind & kitesurfers, swimmers, and sailors ? all making money for charity and having fun in the process.
This year?s charity beneficiaries are the Rocking Horse Appeal (the fundraising charity for Brighton?s Royal Alexandra Hospital for Sick Children), the RNLI and Surfaid International.
People are now being invited to raise sponsorship to paddle around the West Pier in Brighton, with all proceeds going to the three charities. The paddlers will also receive a raffle ticket for every ?20 they raise. The tickets are for the world?s biggest Watersports raffle, held on the day, where they have a chance to win prizes donated by a range of local and national water sports companies businesses.
Teams are also been invited to take part in the ?Paddle Something Unusual? event whereby people try to get around the pier on objects generally associated with the land ? beds, sofas, picnic benches and more!
In addition to the events in the water there?s also a lot happening on the land too, with a tented village hosting DJs, children?s entertainment and live bands, including the Brighton Beach Boys.
Dave Samuel, Paddle Director, says: ?We are encouraging everyone to take part this year and do their bit for charity.
?It?s a real family event for the whole family ? my two year-old son Tyler and 14 year old dog Flip Flop will be taking part!
?We are particularly keen in hearing from people for the ?Paddle Something Unusual? event. One local group has already declared they will be attempting it on a single bed!
"So many charities ask for money, but with the Paddle Round The Pier you get to donate to some worthy causes, maybe win some great prizes and have a fabulous day out thrown-in!
?Anyone interested in taking part in this year?s event should visit www.paddleroundthepier.com, where they can download a sponsorship form or just get more info.?
The event is sponsored this year for the first time by Maui Jim, the Hawaiian sunglasses company.
