John Hegley - The Adventures Of Monsieur Robinet
Published 16th Mar 2010 by Komedia
Komedia is delighted to welcome back John Hegley to Brighton with his show The Adventures of Monsieur Robinet. John's signature tales this time refer to a Frenchman with some unusual (but clean) habits. The stories appear alongside other new works including an address to aliens on the subject of transport, a poem about a non-talking parrot and some animal impersonations with the aid of a handkerchief. The audience are invited to sing along. But not to dance.
“One of the funniest men alive” – The Scotsman
John Hegley is widely known as one of the country's most innovative comic poets with ten best-selling volumes of poetry to his name. Having worked as a bus conductor, social security clerk and a nurse in a local mental hospital, his first public performance monies came from busking his songs, initially outside a shoeshop in Hull, in the late Seventies. He performed on the streets of London in the early Eighties fronting the Popticians, with whom he also recorded two sessions for John Peel, and has since been a frequent performer of his words, sung and spoken, on both local and national radio.
'scandalously talented' – The Sunday Times
After publishing Glad to Wear Glasses in 1990, he has produced nine more books filled with verse, prose, drawings drama and photographs of potatoes, two CDs and one mug. A regular sell-out at the Edinburgh Festival, he has performed at the Montreal Comedy Festival, the USA Comedy Festival in Aspen, shared the stage with Ulrika Jonsson and Anita Dobson in The Pyjama Game and regularly appears on BBC R4. John is also an occasional DJ, dancer and workshop leader, using drawing, poetry and gesture. In 2000, John received an honorary Arts Doctorate from Luton University and had his most notable live engagement in a women's prison, Medellin, Columbia.
JOHN HEGLEY visits Komedia Brighton on Thursday 25 March at 8.30pm (food served from 7pm). Tickets are £12/£8 available on-line at www.komedia.co.uk/brighton or from the Box Office on 0845 293 8480.
