Join Sas And Welcome In Spring At Our Annual Spring Beach Clean
Published 25th Feb 2010 by Surfers Against Sewage
Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) and Shoreham beach need your helping hands for our annual spring beach cleaning. All are welcome to join us at Carats Café, near Hotpipes break on Shoreham beach on Sunday the 28th of February, from 11am.
According to the Met Office spring is arriving early, and the 1st of March is when the flowers and birds believe spring starts. During the last weekend of winter, the 27th and 28th of February, SAS have organised beach cleans all over the UK.
Those of us who use our amazing beaches all years round know only too well the sad state that they get into, as they are neglected over the winter months. It is not just the debris the hordes of fair-weather beach users leave in their considerable wake that is impacting the UK’s beaches. During the stormy winter months a vast array of marine litter is washed onto beaches by storms, ocean currents and prevailing winds.
In the past decade the marine litter (particularly plastics) problem has reached near catastrophic levels. With 2009 breaking all beach litter records and with no signs of an improvement on the horizon, SAS have decided enough is enough and are taking the SAS campaign straight to Gordon Brown. SAS are petitioning the Prime Minister for a much needed National Marine Litter Strategy.
What can you do? Simply turn up at Carats Café, Shoreham on Sunday the 28th from 11am and donate a couple of hours to make the beach a better place. SAS will supply all the gloves and bags. You can also sign the online petition to Gordon Brown calling for a National Marine Litter Strategy to ensure a holistic approach to combating this high tide line of trash. (http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/marine-litter/), Please remember that the more voices we have the more chance there is that Gordon Brown will hear us and maybe begin to understand how passionately the coastal people of the UK feel about our beloved beaches.
SAS Rep, Aaron Jennings says: “SAS and Shoreham beach needs the help of you and your friends. The more people we have at the Hotpipes break on the 28thth of February the bigger the difference we can make and believe me we can make a difference. When 0ne o’clock rolls around Hotpipes WILL look so much better than when we all started and we can enjoy the warm fuzzy feeling that comes after a successful beach clean”
Please ensure you dress for the weather and under 16s must be accompanied by an adult.
For more information on the spring beach cleans contact dom@sas.org.uk or call SAS general enquiries on 01872 553 001.
