Komedia Brighton Approaches Its Millionth Ticket Sale

Komedia Brighton Approaches Its Millionth Ticket Sale
Published 26th Jan 2010 by Komedia

Komedia Brighton has done the sums, counted the number of seats and totted up the ticket sales – the exciting result is that the much loved south-coast venue is just a few tickets away from selling its 1,000,000th ticket, sixteen years after it opened in Brighton.

Komedia co-founder and Director Colin Granger estimates the millionth ticket to be sold in the next seven days – “We’re literally on the cusp of selling our millionth ticket, and with our new February to March 2010 brochure hitting the streets this week we’re expecting a sudden spike of ticket sales. Our millionth ticket holder is in for quite a treat – they’ll receive a golden ticket allowing them free Komedia shows for life.”

That’s correct – the millionth ticket holder will be presented with a golden ticket allowing them free entrance to Komedia shows for the rest of their life. With shows such as the award-winning Krater Comedy Club each week, alongside monthly regulars such as Comic Boom, Tag Comedy and Bent Double as well as big-name touring comedians and bands all year round, they’ll be spoilt for choice.

“THE place in Brighton to catch stand-up comedy”
The Independent

The first Komedia opened sixteen years ago in 1994 on Kemptown’s Manchester Street, based in a near derelict regency building - originally an 18th century billiard hall. Komedia converted this into a 90-seat theatre and 80-seat café-bar. The organisation established itself rapidly and the next three years saw many of Britain’s best-known theatre companies, musicians and comedians performing at the venue. In 1998 - the Manchester Street building proving to be too small to cater for demand - Komedia moved to its present location in the North Laine’s Gardner Street.

“Komedia is a classic theatre and cabaret venue whose offbeat agenda reflects the diversity of the local audience”
The Sunday Times

The final phase of Komedia’s development was completed in 2006, which saw the extension of the building out to Regent Street – creating the Studio Bar performance space – as well as a greatly enhanced theatre space upstairs, a larger downstairs venue and a new, street level café-bar. Komedia now offers a choice of live entertainment equal to anything in the country.

Colin Granger believes that the venue’s continued success is down to a number of factors – “There really is something for everyone - on a weekend, it’s possible to walk from stand-up comedy downstairs, to a band’s acoustic set in the studio bar, to a cabaret show upstairs, followed by a club night - the flexibility of the performance spaces is unsurpassed in town. Our hard-working and knowledgeable staff know what makes a good show and what doesn’t, and being slap-bang in the centre of town means getting here is easy. Here’s to the next million tickets!”
