Komedia Brighton’s May Festivals 2010 Programme Announced
Published 16th Mar 2010 by Komedia
May in Brighton can only mean one thing – it’s Festival time! - and Komedia Brighton has never been busier, presenting a packed programme of events set to enthrall and delight everyone of all ages. With 100 shows across 31 days in three separate spaces - each space showing everything and anything from comedy, music, cabaret, theatre, kid’s shows and club-nights from both Brighton Festival and Brighton Fringe Festival programmes - Komedia Brighton is bursting at the seams with live entertainment-y goodness. Yum!
Acts confirmed for May include Komedia favourite and comedy legend Al Murray, who heads to Brighton as The Pub Landlord for a very special show; utterly dysfunctional yet truly unique musical hilarity from pitch-perfect parodists Die Roten Punkte; the undisputed stars of Edinburgh Fringe 2009 Frisky & Mannish and their superb School Of Pop; Hardeep Singh Kohli serving up a wonderfully funny, laid back evening of cookery and comedy in The Nearly Naked Chef; free swabs and sick notes for all as broadcaster and GP Dr Phil Hammond presents his Rude Health Show; stand-up from if.comedy nominee Andrew Maxwell who presents his smash-hit show, whilst Brighton legend and Chortle Award winner Stephen Grant presents his new show Facepalm.
Expect more lip-syncing that Britney and more blue eye-shadow than Avatar as Australian cabaret queens Drags Aloud at the Movies deliver buckets of pop (and a little corn!) to the South Coast, whilst Showstopper! The Improvised Musical is back with another ingenious, hilarious musical made up on the spot based on your suggestions. A Slice O’ Minelli sees Rick Skye re-wording Liza’s classic hits to create an icon de force of hilarity, and Stockport’s favourite housewife Barbara Nice – Phoenix Nights’ Janice Connolly – presents a special Sing & Dance-a-long to hit film Mamma Mia!
Music lovers aren’t to be overlooked, and Komedia is delighted to welcome a very special gig from The Books, who’s sample-heavy, Americana influenced electric folk heads to the venue as part of the Brighton Festival. Other Brighton Festival treats include 85-year-old drum legend Roy Haynes and the Fountain of Youth Band, as well as Iain King and Alasdair Roberts – two key figures from the UK’s folk renaissance. Expect hi-tempo Eastern European folk from BBC World Music Award winners Terrafolk; folk re-workings of punk classics from Adrian Edmondson and the Bad Shepherds; jaw-droppingly good a’capella singing full of glorious harmonies and beat-boxing from The Magnets and original guitar hero Antonio Forcione returns for a solo show to mark 50 years of Motown… all this and gigs from ex-Strangler Hugh Cornwell, folk princess Martha Tilston and the Woods, classic reggae from Jamaica’s Wailing Souls and much, much more.
Alongside all of this, Komedia’s Studio Bar continues to cement its status as an exciting and eclectic Fringe performance space with brand new theatre and cabaret in the shape of Seal Skin, Tony Garulos, How To Survive a Zombie Apocalypse and Sea Sisters; cracking comedy in The Flying Monk, Persephone’s Comedy Cabaret ,The Origin of the Species and the welcome return of the Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppet Theatre; and a vast programme of music encompassing art rock with Terror – The Musical to Spanish folk from Javier Moreno via Emmy-nominee harpist John Doan.
