Komedia’s Millionth Ticket Sold
Published 17th Feb 2010 by Momedia
Komedia Brighton has sold its 1,000,000th ticket. Having done the sums and totted up the ticket sales (remembering to carry the ‘1’!), the venue is delighted to announce that after sixteen years of cracking comedy, classy cabaret, great gigs and cool club-nights, Komedia has reached the million milestone.
The millionth customer, Emily Owen of Brighton, rang the Box Office this week to book tickets for Krater Comedy Club for Friday 19 February – however, she walked away with much more than four tickets to the award-winning stand-up night. Instead, Emily will be presented with a Golden Ticket when she arrives at the venue on Friday – a golden ticket giving her free admittance to Komedia shows for the rest of their life. With Krater Comedy Club every week, alongside great monthly regulars such as Comic Boom, Tag Comedy and Bent Double - as well as big-name touring comedians and bands all year round - she’ll be spoilt for choice.
“THE place in Brighton to catch stand-up comedy”
The Independent
The first Komedia opened sixteen years ago in 1994 on Kemptown’s Manchester Street, based in a near derelict regency building - originally an 18th century billiard hall. Komedia converted this into a 90-seat theatre and 80-seat café-bar. The organisation established itself rapidly and the next three years saw many of Britain’s best-known theatre companies, musicians and comedians performing at the venue. In 1998 - the Manchester Street building proving to be too small to cater for demand - Komedia moved to its present location in the North Laine’s Gardner Street.
“Komedia is a classic theatre and cabaret venue whose offbeat agenda reflects the diversity of the local audience”
The Sunday Times
The final phase of Komedia’s development was completed in 2006, which saw the extension of the building out to Regent Street – creating the Studio Bar performance space – as well as a greatly enhanced theatre space upstairs, a larger downstairs venue and a new, street level café-bar. Komedia now offers a choice of live entertainment equal to anything in the country.
Colin Granger believes that the venue’s continued success is down to a number of factors – “There really is something for everyone - on a weekend, it’s possible to walk from stand-up comedy downstairs, to a band’s acoustic set in the studio bar, to a cabaret show upstairs, followed by a club night - the flexibility of the performance spaces is unsurpassed in town. Our hard-working and knowledgeable staff know what makes a good show and what doesn’t, and being slap-bang in the centre of town means getting here is easy. Here’s to the next million tickets!”
