Live Review: The Customers, Clearlake & The Crimea @ Freebutt, Feb 06
Published 1st Mar 2006 by Juliet Dubieniec
Brighton?s well-known Lout Promotions put on this sold out event, these 3 bands all have something unique about them.
After a late start (no fault of their own) The Customers set the night off well. I was excited to have arrived there on time and didn?t miss them play their single ?When it comes? (Shady Records). A good song to say the least; you should buy it.
Clearlake again put on another great performance. This time with new guitarist Jimmy, and a new ?pull out your best office tie? look from the band. A great opening night. They have now started their UK tour. The band I?m sure will have only rapturous applause with the new set up. Though be prepared for some of your song favourites to be played at triple the speed. Jason Peggs band, Clearlake have great stage presence and wonderful songs.
The Crimea had a glistening silky red backdrop, fairy lights and a very dark painting (in a gold frame) to set the scene.
I had only heard of them through word of mouth and reading about them in magazines like the NME and Q, so I wanted to catch some of the action. I was quite entertained; good to see a band with a whole load of enthusiasm. The guitarist especially rocked and I loved the Billy Corgan styled vocals. Entertaining The Freebutt isn?t an easy job, though they seemed to do it very well! It took till the third song or so until I was captivated and from there onwards, they had not just me but the whole crowd at their feet. A long time coming? I don?t think they were quite ?lottery winners on acid? last night, but they might be sometime soon. Go and judge for yourself. Maybe a gig at The Concorde 2 is called for? Or a trip out of town, on one of their tour dates.
