London Gay Men's Chorus To Play Brighton's Theatre Royal
Published 19th Nov 2003 by Steve Bustin
The London Gay Men?s Chorus to play Brighton?s Theatre Royal
to mark World AIDS Day.
Show to raise funds for local HIV/AIDS charity Brighton Cares.
The London Gay Men?s Chorus, the UK?s largest and best-known gay choir, are
to perform at Brighton?s prestigious Theatre Royal on Sunday 30th November
at 7.45pm, in a show that marks World AIDS Day on December 1st, and to raise
money for local HIV & AIDS charity Brighton Cares.
The show, called ?Tying The Knot?, is the last stop on the choir?s 2003 UK &
Ireland tour and is an evening of musical romance and love, from flirting
and first love, to lifelong commitment or heartbreak. Stephen Sondheim, Kurt
Weil, Tammy Wynette and Tom Lehrer are among those putting their spin on the
trials and tribulations of the heart, with numbers including ?Company?,
?Sing Me Not a Ballad?, ?Stand By Your Man? and ?The Masochism Tango?.
This one-off performance of ?Tying the Knot? marks World AIDS Day the
following day, Monday December 1st. The theme of this year?s World AIDS Day
is ?Do you have time?? highlighting the fact that five people worldwide die
of AIDS every minute of every day, and that 5 million people were infected
with HIV last year, bringing the total of worldwide infections to 42 million
men, women and children.
The show is a fundraiser for Brighton Cares, a local charity who award
grants to those suffering from HIV or AIDS who live within a 10-mile radius
of Brighton?s Palace Pier. The London Gay Men?s Chorus are pleased to be
able to support their valuable work. The performance will include a time for
reflection and remembrance.
The London Gay Men?s Chorus will be joined by local choirs The Rainbow
Chorus and Hullabaloo to perform from their own repertoire as well as
joining the LGMC on stage for a joint number or two.
With over one hundred singers on stage, and a show that includes full choir
choreography, small ensemble numbers and a lot of comedy, the London Gay
Men?s Chorus have established themselves as one of the most entertaining
choirs in the country.
Tickets are on sale now, priced ?9.50 - ?19.50, with 50 tickets sold for ?5
from 7pm on the night of the show. Tickets are available from the box office
on 01273 328488 or via www.theambassadors.com/theatreroyal/. The concert
will be British Sign Language interpreted for the Deaf and hard of hearing.
The performance will start at 7.45pm.
Further information about The London Gay Men?s Chorus is available on
www.lgmc.org.uk.
The Theatre Royal show is the last date of the choir?s 2003 UK and Ireland
tour, the first time they have toured the UK. Before the Brighton show, the
tour will have already visited Milton Keynes, Dublin, Belfast, London and
Manchester.
Since their formation in 1991, The London Gay Men?s Chorus have performed
across the world including The Sydney Opera House, The Royal Albert Hall,
Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, the opening ceremony of The Millennium
Dome and The Royal Festival Hall. They have sung with Boy George, Elton
John, Cleo Laine, Willard White and Jools Holland among others, and on the
hit single ?Jerusalem? with Fat Les 2000.
The choir?s many TV appearances include Top of the Pops, So Graham Norton,
Comic Relief, TFI Friday, BBC Music Live and The Ruby Wax show. They have
recorded 3 CDs, including the 2002 release, ?Moving Ahead? and were
semi-finalists in the national Choir of the Year competition in 2000.
Martin Brophy, Chairman of The London Gay Men?s Chorus said of the show:
?We are really looking forward to performing at The Theatre Royal to mark
World AIDS Day, and to supporting Brighton Cares. As always audiences can
expect a great evening of top-notch music and entertainment. Anyone who has
seen the London Gay Men?s Chorus in concert before will know that we have
our own unique style and sound, and always keep a few surprises up our
sleeve!?
