Ma Exhibition At Brighton University
By Lou Trigg 12th Aug 2008
Twenty artists, designers and illustrators exhibit projects developed on the University of Brighton’s MA Design by Independent Project and MA Sequential Design and Illustration courses.
These innovative courses attract diverse artists, designers and illustrators from a range of creative disciplines and from many countries. Practitioners from Japan, Cyprus, Taiwan, South Korea, Norway, China, Malaysia and Thailand as well as the United Kingdom show work in animation, film, book illustration and design, the graphic novel, textile art and design, book arts, graphic design, and installation design.
There is work inspired by the experience of the notorious British weather and work that addresses another national obsession; how to make the perfect cup of tea.
Painstakingly sewn ‘stitchures’ illustrate moments from a textile artist’s personal history and explore the apparent invisibility of women in their 50s.

A picture book for adults inspired by working at the Roald Dahl Museum entitled ‘The Hypochondriacs Alphabet’ surveys horrid illnesses and imagined symptoms. Four children’s books explore abstraction.
A graphic designer addresses a personal obsession in ‘ Skateboarding and the Urban Playground’ whilst an architect designs garments to tell a story about the ages of woman.
Nonsense packaging outcomes depict the bizarre martyrdoms and obscure patronages of the saints. An installation invites us to “just consume less.”
What draws these practitioners together is the process of telling stories. Underlying these stories are their subjects; memory, subculture, dreams, emotional absence, statistics, transformation, branding and personality,
autobiography, the cruelty of zoos, over consumption, Egyptian creation myths, seasons in the garden and fun with language.
Professor George Hardie, Subject Leader, says, “Working with an interdisciplinary and international group of students, each concentrating intensely on a personal project, makes the course very exciting for us… and the exhibition very exciting to visit.”
