Michael Manring Live In Brighton
Published 12th Feb 2004 by Richard Ravenhill
I am in the process of promoting a live show in Brighton sponsored by Bass Guitar Magazine, for two world class bassists (Michael Manring and Steve Lawson) as part of the Uk leg of Manring's tour.
Michael Manring very rarely comes to the UK and will only be in this country for a week. His technique and style are truly remarkable, taking the fretless bass to areas that his tutor; the late Jaco Pastorius, had only just begun to explore. Sometimes playing three basses at once, or solo arrangements using 14 different tunings in the same piece and on just one bass guitar, his diverse compositional ideas combined with his amazing technical ability is nothing short of awe-inspiring, and not just for bass guitarists - but for anyone who is passionate about music.
Steve Lawson is based in London but can usually be found taking his real-time looping, one man bass orchestra all over the world, playing with many different musicians - from guitar based bands, pianists, to his latest album collaboration with flautist Theo Travis. Lawson is amongst the most respected of British solo bassists due to his session work, writing for Guitarist and Bass Player magazines and his more technological approach to the bass, looping layer upon layer in real time, to create the simulated sound of a symphony of bass guitars. He has taken his "one man jam band" all over the world, to great acclaim wherever he performs.
The show is being arranged for Friday March 19th at the King And Queen's private Tudor Room and wondered if anyone would like to review it. Also more information is available at www.manthing.com or www.stevelawson.net
