My Noisy Matchbox

My Noisy Matchbox
Published 21st Jun 2006 by Jess

My Noisy Matchbox installations give Brighton an earful as part of Celebrating Age Festival.

?My Noisy Matchbox? ? a community sound art project - is a key part of this year?s Celebrating Age Festival taking place in Brighton and Hove in July. The project is the brainchild of a pair of innovative and creative individuals, Curtis and Simon James, and is all about developing ?audio matchboxes? or ?sonic scrapbooks? of people?s lives. As part of the Celebrating Age festival they have, over the past months, been working with older residents of Brighton and Hove to capture and develop audio snapshots of their individual histories.

Listen to the results?
Simon and Curtis have been working closely with older residents of Brighton and Hove to identify and collate relevant audio material to make up these matchboxes. The material is now in place to develop the individual audio collages that will become the noisy matchboxes. Once the final stage of the production process is complete these audio matchboxes will be available to listen to in various locations around the city as part of the Celebrating Age festival as well as being broadcast on radio and online.

At a venue near you?
From 24th July you will be able to listen to the projects? results at the following locations:

? Open House ? Garden: 146 Springfield Rd, Brighton, BN1 6BZ
? The Hampton - 57 Upper North St, Brighton, BN1 3FH
? Duke Of York's Picturehouse ? Caf? Upstairs: Preston Circus, Brighton, ? The Fringe Restaurant - 10 Kensington Gardens, Brighton, BN1 1AL
? Komedia ? 44-47 Gardner Street, Brighton
? 50 Over 50 Exhibition at the Sallis Benney Gallery, University of Brighton
Simply call in and pick up the headphones at the relevant listening post to hear what they?ve produced.

On the radio?
BBC Southern Counties will also be playing a selection of the sonic matchboxes during July.

And online?
And you will be able to download and listen to them online at the project?s website ? www.mynoisymatchbox.co.uk and on Brighton?s online radio station www.totallyradio.com from 24th July.

Editors notes:
My Noisy Matchbox has been created by Simon James and Curtis James who have over ten years experience working with sound. Together they have produced music for record labels including BMG, PIAS, Deconstruction and Skint.

As sound designers, composers and radio producers Simon and Curtis have created content for BBC TV and Radio Networks, Australia ABC network, Resonance FM, Oneword and Brighton?s Juice 107.2. They are both passionate about sound and specialise in creating finely crafted pieces of work.

Found sound has always played a part in Simon and Curtis?s work, and it is this keen awareness of our sonic surroundings, exploring the important, often un-noticed role they play in our lives, and offering edgy, challenging work that remains entertaining and accessible that drives this project.
