Spoken Word News
Phrased And Confused
Published 6th Oct 2006 by Chris Challis
What means more to you ? Sonnets or love songs? Hemmingway or Hendrix? The music or the words? Luckily you don?t have to decide as PHRASED & CONFUSED brings you both. Poetry and music collide, sit side by side, whisper sweet nothings and size each other up in this special one-off show. PHRASED & CONFUSED gives four of the UK?s most exciting songwriters and poets ? all thrilling performers in their own right - the opportunity to consider the place of words in their work, experiment with word and song and bounce ideas off each other.
Artists who are PHRASED & CONFUSED are: Emma Pollock, for ten years a key contributor to the distinctive sounds of renowned Scottish band The Delgados, and now working on her first solo release for the legendary 4AD label; Chris T-T, a radical English wordsmith, likened to Billy Bragg, whose observational poetry and storytelling are at the heart of his music; Brendan Cleary, a highly respected and darkly comic poet whose latest collection of poems, Weightless, has been described as modern blues, and Sore Throat, the poetry and beat (as opposed to beat poetry) combination of writer/poet Mike Benson and DJ Will Flisk, who?ve worked with the likes of Howie B and David McAlmont.
Before the gig at 4pm, Komedia will host a free afternoon session for new and emerging live literature producers from the region who are interested in developing their work. Places are limited, and based on a first come first serve basis. PHRASED & CONFUSED is a must for anyone who?s ever poured over and learnt by hearts the lyrics of their musical heroes, or who?s ever been affected by the power of the spoken word.
PHRASED AND CONFUSED takes place at Komedia on Thursday 19 October at 8pm. Tickets are ?7/?5 conc. available without a booking fee on-line at www.komedia.co.uk/brighton or from the Box Office on 01273 647100.
