Playgroups Back at Concorde 2
Published 25th Sep 2008 by Declan Cassidy
You've lost that loving feeling? Introducing Brighton's Festival In A Club to beat the winter blues. Saturday 4 October, 11pm-4am, £8 adv/£10 on the night. Famous festival-in-a-club promoters PLAYGROUP return to the Concorde 2, for their biggest local party yet. On Saturday 4 October, the venerable venue will be transformed into four spaces of musical mayhem, headlined by rising stars Babyhead.
Babyhead are a live 10-piece band, hailing from Bristol, who mix ska with drum and bass and hip-hop. With a significant Brighton following, the band, who have not appeared locally for over a year, return to rock Playgroup as part of their UK album tour. Supporting them are Bad Sandwich, one of Brighton’s most outrageous funk acts, and The Correspondents, who became favourites of the summer festivals, with their mix of 1930s big band swing and live hip-hop.
To make things truly special, Playgroup have added their hallmark twists, elevating the event from a good club night to a unique festival-in-a-club experience. Along with the three bands on the main stage, Dub Pressure DJs will be rocking the front bar, ska, funk, soul and jive will be played in the back and acoustic entertainment from .:Kinema:. will give smokers an out-of-the-ordinary diversion.
Yet the spice which makes Playgroup thoroughly unmissable are the little touches – expect a Victorian freak show, free massages, false tarot readings, walkabout performers, face painting and mask-making. From 11pm – 4am, Playgroup turns the Concorde into a compact festival, without the mud. £8 advance tickets are available from the C2 box office, Resident, Rounder Records, or online through TicketWeb. As the event’s occasional slogan says: “Playgroup: Better for the water supply than anti-depressants, since 2006.”
