Preview: Brian Auger @ Concorde II, Wed 29th Nov
Published 18th Oct 2006 by Alex Hammond
As a Hammond and a charity shop record collector, I've ended up with a large collection of ridiculously named organ-based LPs, such as 'Hammond A-Go-Go' and 'Hammond A-Fire', not to mention 'Harmonising Hammond 40'. Most of the tracks on them are sub-lift standard muzak which is almost painful to hear. This is a shame, because the Hammond Organ, played properly, is about as funky an instrument as was ever made.
Brian Auger may not be a name that rings any bells with many young folk today, but he's one of the great jazz musicians of his day and the king of the Hammond. Along with Julie Driscoll and the Trinity, he released great tracks like 'Indian Ropeman' and 'Let the Sunshine In', along with a cover of Dylan's 'This Wheel's on Fire' (used as the theme to Absolutely Fabulous'). He has toured with everyone from Hendrix to Rod Stewart, but don't let that put you off.
If you want something a bit different, and to hear one of the great experimental musicians of the twentieth century, check out Brian Auger at the Concorde at the end of November.
