Pusher Trilogy Review & Competition
Published 5th Jun 2006 by Charlotte Philby
Common associations with Denmark are often confined to bacon, Carlsberg and eternal darkness. Whilst the latter is actually applicable to its Scandinavian siblings, Sweden and Finland, and Denmark is a proud bearer of a sufficient supply of daylight, there is a shady side of the Danish capital that is rarely observed. Enter the Pusher Trilogy, providing an extraordinary insight into the desperate and murky Copenhagen underworld.
Director, Nicolas Winding Refn, leads the audience on a disturbing journey through drug-fuelled gang culture, whilst addressing the delicate intricacies of everyday human existence. A sensitive balance of realism and experimental production, each film respectively deals with human complexity, amidst the turbulent economy of the moral underdogs.
Reflecting the nihilistic undertone of Fincher?s Fight Club, the Pusher films resist the sensationalist glorification of the ethically vacuous, and emphasises the futility and inevitable self-destruction resulting from a life subsumed by racial tension and gang warfare.
