Sas Push For Better Public Information For Brightons Water Sports Community
Published 20th Jan 2010 by Dom
SAS's Brighton rep Aaron Jennings and Campaign Director Andy Cummins met MP Celia Barlow and representatives from the Environment Agency and Southern Water at Westminster last week. Aaron Jennings called for the meeting on the back of last summer's Panorama sewage expose that starred SAS and featured raw sewage escaping from combined sewer overflows into our seas.
Aaron Jennings informed all present about water users in the Brighton and Hove area, when the water was used and by how many people. Much of this was news to the other representatives present.
Both Aaron and Andy Cummins pushed for better real time public information for Brighton's water sports community. Proposing that as soon as raw sewage and wastewater was discharged along the coast, Southern Water would make that information available to the Local Authorities. This was supported by Celia and the Environment Agency. Southern Water are currently investigating the costs and availability of updating their system.
With real time public information, surfers and other water users can make informed decisions about using the water before potentially exposing themselves to harmful pathogens such as Ecoli 0157, Hepatitis A, Gastro Enteritis and much more.
SAS's Brighton Rep, Aaron Jennings says: "Learning that raw sewage can regularly be discharged into our seas was obviously a shock to a lot of people. SAS are just pushing for better public information so we can all make informed decisions before exposing ourselves to potentially harmful pathogens."
