Showstopper! The Improvised Musical
Published 13th Jan 2010 by Komedia
After a sell-out Edinburgh and London seasons, Showstopper! is coming to Brighton for four festive dates between Christmas and New Year.
Showstopper! is entirely improvised: a brand new musical is created at every performance. A writer has just one night to create a hit show to impress his producer. Stuck for ideas, he takes audience suggestions for a title, storylines and musical styles that they’d like to see in the show. The Showstoppers then create a musical from scratch based around that structure. Utterly unpredictable, frequently side-splittingly funny, packed with drama and featuring dazzling dance routines and catchy melodies, Showstopper! leaves enchanted audiences singing all the way home.
‘If you admired the Comedy Store Players for their ability to think on their feet, this bunch do it with the same verve and flair, but set to music. I was left open-mouthed … I can honestly say that I'd opt for this show's wild, inventive energy over The Sound of Music any day.’ - Lyn Gardner, The Guardian
This amazing format was created by Sticking Place Artistic Director Adam Meggido and veteran improviser Dylan Emery, both of whom worked closely with the late, great theatre maverick, Ken Campbell. This collaboration resulted in Shall We Shog? (Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, 20005); Décor Without Production (for The Royal Court Theatre 50th anniversary celebrations); In Pursuit Of Cardenio (Edinburgh Festival 2006); and the extraordinary 50-hour Improvathon.
‘Don’t miss seeing Showstopper! You really mustn't.' - Kate Copstick, The Scotsman
This year has seen a new residency for Showstopper! at the Drill Hall and their return to Leicester Square Theatre and The Kings Head as well as bringing their unique brand of musical entertainment to the Greenwich Theatre.
'I sat weeping with joy and laughter - and the audience reacted as if it was the first night of Gypsy - hilarious entertainment by the brilliant Showstoppers.' - Michael Coveney - Whatsonstage.com
The Showstoppers are: Chris Ash, Duncan Walsh Atkins, Ruth Bratt, Julie Clare, Dylan Emery, Pippa Evans, Sean McCann, Adam Meggido, Philip Pellew, Oliver Senton, Nathan Taylor and Lucy Trodd. Created by Dylan Emery and Adam Meggido.
Showstopper! visits Komedia Brighton on Saturday 30 January at 8.30pm. Tickets are £26.50 (meal deal) / £16 / £14 / £12 available on-line at www.komedia.co.uk/brighton or from the Box Office on 0845 293 8480.
