Ska-kestra In The Fringe!

Ska-kestra In The Fringe!
Published 21st Apr 2010 by Michael Munday

SKA-KESTRA RETURNS TO THE FRINGE! Friday 21 May.
Presented by Ska Toons

Big, big boomshakkalakka – now at Concorde2!

For the fourth year running, the epic SKA-KESTRA returns – Ska Toons present their 20-piece big-band with its unique take on classic ska, funk and jazz.
The swaggering, skanking, blisteringly big sound of the Ska-Kestra returns to the Brighton Fringe – this time to Concorde2 on Friday 21st after last year’s sold-out knockout success. The twenty-piece Ska orchestra is led by top British jazzer Mark Bassey (trombone) and features great soloists from an amazing fourteen-piece horn section. Add to that the Ska Toons rhythm section and the wonderful Ms Helen Nicholls on vocals, and we’re in for another sell-out night of their ska-jazz-funk fusion.
As well as ska classics the repertoire includes Ska takes on Mingus, Motown, and rocksteady big-band originals from the pens of tenor player Andy Pickett and guitarist Michael Munday.
Dancin’ time at Concorde2!

‘An appetising array of every brass instrument under the sun teased an audience eager for tunes as we waited for ‘the Ska-kestra’ to likewise adorn the stage. This giant band was enthusiastic and fantastic, beginning with ska at its most pure and originally typical of the genre, later adding soulful vocals, and belting out covers such as the classic ‘Feeling Good’. A very mixed crowd either jovially tapped their feet or skanked like absolute lunatics at the front.’
