Song Writing Competition

Song Writing Competition
Published 23rd Jun 2006 by Helen Corpe

Brighton based charity Target Tuberculosis is launching a regional competition to find the songwriting stars of the future. Open to people living within the borders of Surrey and Sussex, the competition launches this month and is being supported by famous figures from the music world, such as lyricist Sir Tim Rice, songwriter Tony Macaulay, record producer David Courtney and ‘Scottish’ Tony, manager of acts like breakthrough band, The Upper Room.

To record your tune for Songfactor, simply come down to Suga Qube (5 Castle Square, North Street) on the 20th September from 7pm onwards. Entry is free and there will also be DJ’S and the opportunity for your song to be played on local radio.

The winner of the songwriting contest, which is being run in conjunction with the Brighton and Hove Soiree Rotary Club, will receive £3,000 of musical/recording equipment of their choice. The closing date for entries is 30 September 2006.

Entrants must write an original, unpublished song and submit it on CD format. There is a £10 entry fee, which goes directly to the Target Tuberculosis charity in the form of a donation. Full entry details are posted on the website –www.songfactor.co.uk - and entry forms can be downloaded from the site. Ten winning songs will be short-listed by the judges and made available on the site from early October for the public to listen to and then vote for their favourite by post, text and email.

Competition judge Tim Rice said: “We hope to unearth a hot bed of songwriting talent and are very much looking forward to the entries flying in. My advice to entrants is just to focus on the songwriting – this is not a singing competition. Hopefully the competition will be a great success, raising awareness of Tuberculosis and generating funding for a very worthy cause.”
