The Magic Lantern Comes To Brighton, Shoreham And Lewes
Published 21st Oct 2008 by BODROGHY Balint
Magic Lantern is an educational cinema club for children aged 5 to 12. It introduces them to the fun, culture, history and technology of cinema in a memorable way: the children receive a magazine before the show to highlight key aspects of the film and at the show they are engaged in chat by presenters who then enact a sketch on stage – and then, well prepared, they see an outstanding film chosen from all ages and genres of film from around the world.
Magic Lantern was founded in Switzerland in 1992 and now operates in a dozen countries in Europe, North Africa and South America. It came to Brighton in 2006 under the patronage of Sir Richard Eyre and support from the Arts Council, Brighton & Hove Council, Screen South, Grassroots Grants and Awards for All.
Now in its 3rd season in Brighton, the Magic Lantern is coming to the Ropetackle Arts Centre in Shoreham, opening on Saturday November 15th at 2 pm, and the All Saints Art Centre in Lewes – with Buster Keaton, on film and in person (?)!
Membership costs £25 (£20 for siblings) for the whole season; ‘tasters’ at £5 per person, valid at any of the three Sussex venues. Children normally attend unaccompanied under the care of CRB checked volunteers (leaving parents free for a couple of hours on busy days).
The Magic Lantern works closely with partner schools on film education and the foundations of media literacy and runs joint creativity workshops built around the experience of film.
