The Utopians: 'britain's Littlest Killer' Ep
Published 11th Apr 2006 by The Utopians
The Utopians return with a taster from their forthcoming new album in the shape of a 3 track EP called ?Britain?s Littlest Killer?. The album will be called ?Britain?s Biggest Killer?.
In the 18 months it has taken to write, record and produce the album, a lot has changed in the world of Brighton-based duo The Utopians.
Most noticeably, perhaps, they have changed their name from The Uterus Women to The Utopians, as this was felt by Nick to be much more suitable for a band in the current climate of happy happy popstar call centres, whilst still being visceral in its combination of the words uterus and fallopians.
Also, after a succession of bass players following the departure of original founder member Gregory Ferguson (Jupiter Ace), the line up has finally stabilized with glamorous Brighton DJ extraordinaire Heidi Heelz taking the role.
The band have continued to gig regularly around the south coast of England, and have supported many loons, from Selfish Cunt to Wendy James.
The new E.P. was recorded mainly at the band?s home studio, The Death Bedsit, which Nick put together at the same time as writing and recording the songs- a factor in the material?s protracted gestation. Whilst most of the instruments (guitars, analogue and soft synthesizers, mellotron & chamberlin) were played by Nick, there are a few guest appearances here and there. The most notable of which is Jamie Manners of The Vichy Government, who crops up as guest vocalist on the track Piece of Me. This track is loosely based on the sorry tale of a mate of Nick?s whose covers band were beaten with bar stools when it became apparent to the Belfast bar manager that they did not have a long enough set to play for the required two and a half hours. Jamie takes the role of the bar manager, and has never sounded so butch?
The other tracks featured on the E.P. are ?The Utopians?(parentheses denoting irony, as in Bowie?s ?Heroes?), which goes some way to explain the bands name change. and Stamp It Out!, which is about those in authority passing off inconvenient questions as ?unhelpful negativity? and features a real mediaeval witches spell.
Nick Carlisle: vocals, guitar, synthesizers, mellotron, chamberlin, programming
Heidi Heelz: backing vocals, bass guitar, monosynth
