Two Spot Gobi Play Komedia

Two Spot Gobi Play Komedia
Published 22nd Oct 2009 by Komedia

Somewhere between acoustic soul and upbeat grooves lies Two Spot Gobi. Massive beats, infectious melodies and an eclectic mix of musical styles make for an organic sound unlike anything else… The inclusion of cello and trumpet in the bands make up is unusual, yet these two instruments are fundamental in the band's delivery of a distinct live experience crossing over a vast array of musical genres... Their irresistibly cool up beat vibes and chilled, acoustic sounds incorporating everything from jazz and funk to blues and pop have been winning them a rapidly growing fanbase as well as prestigious bookings across the south of England.

“I was staggered by the musical diversity of this brilliant band.” – What’s On South West

Their music recently came to the attention of US singer/songwriter Jason Mraz who was one of lead singer James Robinson's earliest influences alongside Jack Johnson and Ben Harper. He caught the band at Plymouth Hub, part-way through his support tour of James Blunt, and confessed to being very impressed by their exciting new sound.

Frontman Plymouth-born-and-raised singer/songwriter James spent his teenage summers surfing the North Cornish coast and playing guitar on the beach at night. But the band evolved at Sussex University where he relocated to study History. Initial jam sessions between James and house mate Dino Randhawa, an experienced guitarist of the London blues/funk scene, and trumpeter Duncan Drury showed much promise. But the arrival of Sussex Uni music student Rob Lewis, a fantastic guitarist and classical cellist, saw the fledgling Two Spot Gobi really take shape.

As part of Rob's final year studio project, the foursome took advantage of the state-of-the-art recording facilities at Sussex Uni to make an EP, Melodious Star, in June 05. However it wasn't until September, when the band recruited a couple of like-minded musos music graduate Ben Rosario, bass, and professional drummer Ben Matthews that they began to think about playing live.

Their newly recorded album Everywhere You Should Have Been was released earlier this year, with their deliciously summery debut single Sunshine Lady already getting people whispering that 2009 could be the breakthrough year for the distinctive six piece vibes of Two Spot Gobi. This special show features support from Koala Friday and Bushwalla.

TWO SPOT GOBI visits Komedia Brighton on Tuesday 10 November at 7pm. Tickets are £6 available on-line at www.komedia.co.uk/brighton or from the Box Office on 0845 293 8480.
