Up In Lights - Brighton Digital Festival To Launch With A Bang
Published 31st Oct 2007 by Jo Roberts
A month-long celebration of all things digital in Brighton To mark the occasion, The festival will be launched on November 5th at 6pm outside the Unitarian Church on Brighton’s New Road. It’ll use sensor-powered technology to create an interactive animation – so the
audience gets to create the display. Consider it Brighton’s
very own fireworks night, but without the gunpowder, treason and plot (or fireworks).
Brighton Digital festival (throughout November 2007), is a month-long celebration of creative talent in the media art and technology sectors in Brighton. The launch event, entitled ‘Pyro(technics) to the People’ consists of a fireworks display – but with a contemporary twist. Interactive animation simulating pyrotechnics will be projected onto the Unitarian Church on Brighton’s New Road; the animation is movement and sound-activated, so will be bought to life by the public, who will trigger coloured light patterns by interacting with the display. The event is free of charge and all are welcome.
The animation has been designed by Seb Lee-Delisle of Brighton’s own Plug-In Media, who will be directing the animation at source, along with technical support from Brightonart. The event is produced and managed by Wired Sussex.
Wired Sussex’s Director of Projects, Tara Solesbury, said today ‘Pyro (technics) to the People offers a unique alternative to the more traditional bonfire nights celebrations, with a Brighton twist. The name is partly a tongue in cheek homage to the ‘power to the people’ political slogan used in the 70’s and partly a reference to the interactive experience. It’s the peoples’ fireworks!’
Pyrotechnics marks the official launch of a still-growing programme of events for Brighton Digtial Festval, which in turn highlights Brighton’s growing reputation as the hub for digital media with the UK. The industry has grown exponentially within the last 10 years, currently consisting of over 750 companies accounting for over £150 million revenue.
